About Upwork

Quick answer. Joining Upwork is free for freelancers and clients, and posting a job costs nothing. Freelancers pay a 0–15% service fee per contract (shown before you submit a proposal and fixed once the contract starts) plus $0.15 for each extra Connect. Clients on the Basic plan pay a 3–5% service fee when they hire, and US clients paying by bank account may qualify for the lower rate. A contract initiation fee may also apply. Older guides that quote a sliding 20/10/5% fee or a flat 10% fee are out of date.

How the fees add up on a $1,000 project

These figures use Upwork’s published ranges, so treat them as an illustration rather than a quote. Your exact rates are shown before you submit a proposal or hire.

  • Client on Basic: a 3–5% service fee is $30–$50 on top of the $1,000, plus any contract initiation fee.
  • Freelancer: a 0–15% service fee is $0–$150, so you keep $850–$1,000 before Connects and withdrawal fees.

The freelancer fee is the part that moves most from contract to contract, which is why checking the rate before you send a proposal matters.

What changed (so you can ignore the old numbers)

Many articles still describe a sliding 20% / 10% / 5% fee or a flat 10% freelancer fee. Upwork now lists a variable 0–15% service fee that depends on the type of contract plus supply and demand. If a guide does not match the table above, it is probably out of date.

About Upwork

Upwork is a large freelance marketplace and a publicly traded company (Nasdaq: UPWK). Both freelancers and clients use it worldwide, so the practical question is less “is it legit” and more “what does it cost, and is it worth it for me?”

Is Upwork worth the fees?

That depends on how you would otherwise find work or hire. Fees pay for payment protection, dispute support and automatic payment handling. Freelancers who already have a steady client base may find the fee less attractive, while newer freelancers and clients hiring outside their local area get the most from the platform.

Upwork’s terms restrict moving an active contract off the platform, so read the current terms before arranging anything outside Upwork.
