About Upwork

Upwork is the largest freelance marketplace in the world, and unlike most of the other offers on this page, there’s no real “is it legit” question here. It’s a publicly traded company (Nasdaq: UPWK), it’s been operating since 2015 under this name (longer under its earlier brands, oDesk and Elance), and both freelancers and clients use it in the millions. The actual question people have is simpler and more practical: what does it cost, and is it worth it?

What Upwork actually charges (2026 structure)

Joining is free for both sides. Where it gets real is the fee structure, and it changed in 2025, so if you’re going off an older review, the numbers are probably stale.

For freelancers: a variable service fee of 0% to 15% per contract, locked in the moment you send your proposal, replacing the old flat 10%. On top of that, applying to jobs costs Connects at $0.15 each, unless you’re on Freelancer Plus ($19.99/month, which bundles 100 Connects and full access to Upwork’s AI assistant).

For clients: a marketplace fee of 3% to 7.99% depending on payment method (3% with a US ACH bank transfer, up to 7.99% on credit card or PayPal), plus a $0.99 to $14.99 contract initiation fee per new hire. Business Plus accounts pay 8% to 10% but get priority support and team management tools in return.

Net effect: both sides pay something, and the exact number depends heavily on payment method and plan tier, not a single flat rate you can quote from memory.

Getting started as a freelancer

  • Build a profile with a clear specialty, not a generalist “I can do anything” pitch; Upwork’s own search ranks specific skills higher.
  • Your first few proposals matter more than you’d think. A tailored, short pitch that references the actual job post beats a copy-pasted template every time.
  • Early reviews compound. A handful of 5-star jobs, even small ones, unlock visibility that a portfolio alone won’t.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Upwork free to join?

Yes, for both freelancers and clients. Fees apply per contract and per Connect used to apply for jobs, not to create an account.

How much does Upwork take from freelancers?

A variable 0% to 15% service fee per contract, set when you submit your proposal.

Is Upwork worth it?

For freelancers building a client base or clients who want vetted talent without running their own hiring process, yes; the fees are the real cost of that convenience and access, not a hidden catch.
